As reported in the Washington Post today, thousands of previously unreleased Congressional Research Service (CRS) Reports were published on Wikileaks.org, an online clearinghouse for leaked documents, in a victory for open government advocates. Wikileaks obtained the CRS Reports from a confidential source who accessed them from the congressional intranet, and the organization claims that it is set up to receive a steady stream of new CRS Reports from the same source as they are released. In addition, Wikileaks has agreed to provide all of the new CRS Reports it receives to OpenCRS.com, the largest current repository of CRS Reports.
The Congressional Research Service (CRS) performs public policy research directly for Members of Congress and Congressional Committees, but their reports are not made directly available to members of the public as a matter of policy.
