Finding Legal Forms

Practicing lawyers require sample versions of standard legal documents known as model forms. There are sets of forms for federal practice, for most states, and for specialized subject areas. Some sets of forms include annotations, checklists, and citations to cases in which the forms were used. Most law firms maintain in-house collections of forms relating to their specific areas of practice. Generally, there are two kinds of forms:

instruments, which are used to complete transactions between private parties in business, real estate, estate planning, etc., and

pleadings, which are filed in court.

Model forms of both types of legal documents can be found in the library, in books, looseleafs, electronic databases, and the Internet. Remember to browse the shelves for additional form books shelved close to the following titles of books and looseleafs for each subject area. Some titles may also be duplicated in Westlaw or Lexis.

The Internet is an ever expanding source of legal forms. Good sources include Findlaw Forms, Federal Forms Catalog, the 'Lectric Law Library, and the IRS forms page. You may also try various search engines, such as Google or Yahoo, for access to self-help forms available from publishers or law firms, but be wary of costs and verify the quality of the source. If you need additional help in finding and using forms, ask a Librarian at the Reference Desk located in the Reading Room.

To find form books for a particular state, do a keyword search in GULLiver for the name of your state and the word "forms". For example, a good keyword search for Virginia formbooks would be:
