Circulation - Fines

Overdue fines are charged according to the following schedule:

  • Reserve materials $0.50 per hour
  • General collection materials $1.00 per day
  • Videotapes $2.00 per day
  • Overdue recall surcharge $3.00 per day

If materials from the general collection are not returned or renewed before they are two weeks overdue, daily fines will accrue. If items are not returned by four weeks past the due date, the Library will declare the material lost and charge the user for the cost of the book, a processing fee, and the accrued overdue fine. Similarly, replacement bills are issued for videotapes at one week past the due date and for Reserve materials at 4 days past the due date.

Patrons who return items after these fees have been assessed may be entitled to partial reimbursement. Appeals for the reduction or waiver of fine charges may be submitted in writing on the Fine Appeal Form available at the Circulation Desk.

All fines and charges are added to the patron's student account, and all payments are handled through the Student Accounts office. Payments are not accepted at the Circulation Desk. Inquiries concerning the amount or the reason for fines or charges assessed should be made at the Williams Circulation Desk at 202-662-9131.
