GEORGETOWN LIBRARIES - All are open to GULC students with a valid student ID. Before using the Maternal and Child Health Library, it is best to call ahead (703/524-7802) to ensure that assistance will be available.

LOCAL LIBRARIES - Each library has different access policies. Anyone may conduct research in a public library, but some will only allow local residents to check out books. Most academic libraries will allow access to students from other schools, but that is not always the case. Call ahead to avoid a wasted trip. Ask at the reference desk if you need us to fill out a form or write a letter to enable you to visit another library with a restricted access policy.
LIBRARIES OUTSIDE THE AREA - A wide variety of libraries exist throughout the country that provide resources to help in your research. The caveats pertaining to local libraries pertain to libraries in other areas as well, so call ahead to find out if you are allowed to visit. Again, we are happy to assist you in obtaining permission to use other libraries.
PUBLIC LIBRARIES - Public libraries can provide you with the materials and services to satisfy your reading and listening pastimes. Committed to meeting the needs of diverse communities, public libraries offer the avid learner various titles in multiple formats, quiet places to study and convenient locations to access the internet wirelessly. Try out your local library to fulfill your recreational, self-improvement, and personal knowledge needs. Here are some of the public library systems local to the Law Center.
Comprised of the main Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library and 23 branch libraries, the DC Public Library provides access to thousands of titles in all kinds of formats. These include downloadable version of books, audiobooks, video and music. The library's ebook collection includes LearningExpress programs which provide career guides, study aides, and test-preparation books to help people prepare for high-stakes tests; to pass licensing, certification, or competitive entry-level exams; or to advance in school or professionally. Also part of the library's downloadable library is its Language Learning collection offering lessons for 28 languages.
Anyone who resides, works, pays property taxes or attends school in the District, or resides in one of many nearby MD and VA counties or cities, can apply for a library card.
The DC Public Library provides other services including meeting rooms and Wi-Fi connection. It also sells used books, greeting cards, postcards, and small gifts through its online store and sponsors a variety of local book clubs. Volunteers for the library's community outreach programs are welcomed.
ALEXANDRIA LIBRARY (VA) :
Founded in 1794, the city's library consists of four branch libraries and includes the Local History Special Collections whose materials focus on Alexandria and Virginia history and genealogy and the Civil War. Along with its print collection, the Alexandria Library offers electronic access to downloadable books, audiobooks, music and videos. Other services offered by the library include wireless internet access, meeting rooms and literary programs and book discussion groups.Anyone who lives, works, owns property or attends school within the city limits of Alexandria is entitled to a free library card and allowed full use of the facilities. Library privileges are extended to those who live in Arlington County, District of Columbia, Fairfax County, Falls Church, Fauquier County, Frederick County (MD), Loudoun County, Prince George's County (MD), Prince William County and Montgomery County (MD).
ARLINGTON PUBLIC LIBRARY (VA) :
Comprised of eight libraries, the Arlington Public Library offers downloadable books and audiobooks, including language learning media, and free wireless connection. Meeting rooms found in some of the libraries. These rooms offer tables and chairs arranged in a classroom style and can even include A/V equipment or kitchenette. Four of the libraries offer study rooms that can accommodate 2-8 people. The Central Library sponsors the Nonprofit Resource Center which houses special collection of articles, books, videos, databases, web sites, and guides about non-profit operations.You can get a free library card if you live, work, or attend school in Arlington or if you live in one of the participating reciprocal jurisdictions, including DC, City of Alexandria, City of Falls Church, Fairfax County, Fauquier County, Loudoun County, Prince William County, Frederick County (MD), Montgomery County (MD), and Prince George's County (MD).
Opportunities at the Arlington Public Library include volunteering for various events and donating books, magazines, DVDs, CDs to the Library’s Book Sale.
FAIRFAX PUBLIC LIBRARY (VA) :
Fairfax Public Library consists of 23 branch libraries located throughout the county and the City of Fairfax and includes the Fairfax County Archives and Records Center and the Virginia Room. The Virginia Room maintains a collection of regional history, genealogy, local and state government information and legal resources. Of particular interest is the Confederate Civil War military history collection, maps, photographic archive, manuscripts, local newspapers, and rare books.You can get a free library card if you live, work, or attend school in Arlington or if you live in one of the participating reciprocal jurisdictions, including DC. Branch libraries offer free wireless connection and staff who speak a variety of foreign languages, including Arabic, Farsi, Hindi, Korean, and Urdu.
MONTGOMERY COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARIES (MD) :
Montgomery County Public Libraries include 21 branch libraries, a correctional facility library and a mobile van serving children at day care centers and low income housing communities. The Libraries maintain special collections like the Business Information Center, Disability Resources Center, Health Information Center and Legal Materials Collection which houses the Maryland Annotated Code, Montgomery County Code, Rockville City Code and DC Code. The County Libraries also offer Wi-Fi connection, meeting rooms, group study and tutor rooms.
Anyone who lives, works, or goes to school in Montgomery County, or who is eligible for a library card in Maryland, the District of Columbia, or Northern Virginia, may apply for a library card. Membership provides you with electronic access to the downloadable collection of books, audiobooks, music, videos, and language learning programs as well as magazines and newspapers.
The County Libraries holds frequent book sales at various branches however the Friends of the Library maintains three permanent bookstores that sell affordable used books, CDs, and DVDs and are located in Rockville, Wheaton and Gaithersburg.
PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY MEMORIAL LIBRARY SYSTEM (MD) :
The county's Library System consists of 18 libraries, offering not only their print and downloadable collection of books, audiobooks, music, videos and periodicals but also Wi-Fi connection, small study rooms, large meeting rooms, book stores and book sales, and space for exhibits and posters. Serving a diverse community, the Library System subscribe to materials in many languages, especially Spanish, French, Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese. It maintains special collections like the Maryland Room which houses current and historical materials on the state, emphasizing Prince George's County.
Anyone who lives, works, attends school or owns property in Maryland, DC, Alexandria, Arlington County, Fairfax County, Falls Church, Loudoun County, Prince William County, may get a Prince George's County library card free of charge.
