This page connects you to some resources to help you during the first year of law school. Anytime you have questions about any aspect of legal research or using the Library, feel free to contact the Reference Desk in person (in the Williams Reading Room or on Wolff main floor; see hours), by phone at 202-662-9140, by email, or online via Live Help chat service.
Georgetown Law faculty may use one of three types of course management web-based software, listed here:
Photocopying and Scanning. Photocopy machines are on the second, third and fourth floors of the Williams Library and on the third floor of Wolff Library. You need your GOCard to make copies, which are $.08/page.
Printing. Printers are located throughout the libraries. Prints are $.10/page. You need your GOCard to print.
Scanners. Self-serve digital scanners are located in the Williams Reading Room Reserve area, the Williams Student Computer Lab, and at the Wolff Circulation Desk. A more advanced scanner is available at the Technology Reference Desk in the Williams 3rd floor Computer Lab. Scanning is free.
Lexis & Westlaw. Lexis and Westlaw passwords are distributed at orientation, and afterwards at the Reference Desks. Printing from Lexis and Westlaw is free. Lexis and Westlaw printers are located on the 4th floor of Williams in Room 435A and in Wolff Room 4011.
GOCard. You may add money to your GOCard in the copy rooms on the 3rd floor of Williams and near the copier on the 3rd floor of the Wolff Library. You may also add money online.
If you forget a power cord at home, the library might have one you can borrow during the day. View a list of equipment you can check out, including power cords for several laptop models, as well as USB drives for data backup.
Printers, copiers, scanners and group study rooms can be easily found on the library's page: Quick Guide to Library Locations.
In conjunction with the Legal Research and Writing faculty, our reference librarians have developed a series of online legal research tutorials to teach you the important research skills you'll need to succeed in school and in practice. For example, try our Treaties Research Tutorial to learn more about researching treaties.
If you're lost in a course or need an expert's view on a nuanced legal issue, try using the Library's Treatise Finder to locate treatises on over 50 practice areas. Each guide points researchers to the preeminent scholarly works on a topic, as well as quick study aids.
Need a comprehensive guide to a specific research topic or technique? Visit our Research page for guides and databases on international and foreign law topics, as well as U.S. federal and state topics. Some of our most popular international guides include From GATT to WTO, Human Rights Law, International Trade Law and Introduction to International Law.
Sign-up for training sessions from the Library online. Lexis and Westlaw also offer research classes. Information is available once you sign in.
