Tools for Students with Disabilities

This page connects patrons with disabilities to some resources and information on using the library. Anytime you have questions about any aspect of using the Library, feel free to contact the Circulation Desk or the Reference Desk.

Access

The public areas of the Williams and Wolff libraries are fully accessible to patrons with disabilities.

Entry

  • Williams Library is accessible by stairs at the building's entrance, by ramp from 2nd Street NW, and by chair lift at the building's entrance (contact the Public Safety officer at the 2nd Street entrance of McDonough Hall, 202-662-9325).
  • The Wolff Library entry is accessible via the Hotung Building elevators.

Automatic Doors and Elevators

All public areas of the libraries are accessible via elevators. Stack areas in Williams are accessible via automataic doors at the West entrances. However, the following are exceptions:

  • Williams Library Reading Room Mezzanine. Patrons who are not able to use the Reading Room stairs to the mezzanine level may have their GoCards programmed for access to the entrance door on the third floor atrium (Room 301). Contact Public
  • Wolff Library 4th floor, which is accessible by staff elevator with GoCard programming authorization. Contact Public Safety, 202-662-9325.

General Assistance

Patrons may request assistance at any of the following service points:

  • Circulation Desk (main floor, both libraries)
  • Reference Desk (main floor, both libraries)
  • Special Collections/Archives (main floor, Williams)
  • Public Safety (entrances to Williams Library and Hotung Building)
  • In-house telephones (all levels, both libraries)

Assistance for Patrons with Disabilities

  • Shelf Retrieval. The Circulation staff of both libraries will retrieve books from shelves for patrons who need assistance.
  • Scholars' Studies. In certain situations, Scholars' Studies are available for patrons with disabilities who are working on long-term assignments. Ask at the Circulation Desk for more information.

Emergency Information

In the event of an emergency the Law Center's alarm system is activated, followed by an announcement on the public address system. All patrons are required to follow the instructions announced on the public address system.

Patrons who generally need to use the elevators to exit the building should go immediately to the nearest fire stairwell, where emergency personnel will arrive to offer directions and assistance.

Patrons who have a medical or other emergency while in the library should call Public Safety, extension 9325. In-house telephones are available on every level.
